This text is very helpful in reviewing and evaluating research to enable evidence-based nursing practice. Purchased book for class, and have been using frequently.

Monkey Business

They say a thousand monkeys typing randomly will eventually compose the entire works of Shakespeare. That's false because this book is actually the result of a thousand monkeys typing at random. You could not pay me enough money to convince me that this book was in any way, shape, or form edited before it was published. Oh, and in many places the information is downright wrong. If you have any previous experience with research this book will incite a fiery rage within your being that can be only stoked by the subsequent loss of brain cells caused by reading it. Disturbingly, I found out my school uses this same book for their graduate level research course. That's odd because had I lived in Salem back in the day I wouldn't have even defiled a witch burning by using this book as fuel.

Unless you're a nursing researcher or want to be - steer clear of this book!

This was a required textbook for a BSN course at a local university. One of the co-authors of this book was on sabattical and didn't teach the course but it was based on her C-T-E structure format for evaluating published nursing articles. The book was exceptionally brief in all aspects of analyzing articles. The format she described for analyzing them seemed to make sense but the lack of depth about any of it made it all seem like a completely made up evaluation tool - not supported by evidence. The book was also written from a perspective of a nursing researcher FOR a nursing researcher and not the lay nurse. As a result, concepts introduced in the book on how to analyze research were baffling with vocabulary thrown at you and no clear explanation of it all. Without having the author available who made the course around this textbook, students became lost easily. This book is more appropriate for nurses pursuing a nursing research masters or doctoral degree. I would not recommend this book as a textbook or as a recreational read.
