Chaka Kahn�is a musician whose unique blend of jazz, rock, funk, soul, disco, and pop has earned her 10 Grammy Awards. In 1999 she established the Chaka Khan Foundation, which assists at-risk children.�Paul Natkin�is a professional photographer who has photographed major music stars since the mid-1960s, including Frank Sinatra, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tina Turner, and countless others. The People's Place will Touch Your Heart and Fuel your Appetite...

This book took me by complete surprise. I thought I would flip straight to Ruby's Restaurant as it is one of the few soul restaurants left in Chicago, my hometown. But each chapter captivates and fascinates you -- because of the heartfelt stories behind each place...the tenacity of the people who fought and sacrificed to keep these treasures open and thriving. Each chapter puts a face and heart on the restaurant, anecdotes that paint the portrait of these gathering spots -- and the role they played not only in the lives of its patrons but in American history. It is so sweet to see how organic and authentic the marketing is...like Sweetie Pie's rules of the road (No Sagging Allowed - No Wearing of Hoods in Sweetie Pie's) or Martha Lou Gadsden's portrait blazing on the outside of Martha Lou's Kitchen, a former gas station. The recipes are simple and accessible but the stories behind each place are rich and deep. Surely because this author, Dave Hoekstra, can really write. Mix Hoekstra's sensitivity and depth with fabulous food and it is a bestseller.

History Class or Family Reunion? Both and more

This book brings history to life by honoring the human story behind the Civil Rights Movement and the years since....(with recipes). Its a little like time travel without having to leave the present day. Growing up in the 70's and 80's, I learned about the Civil Rights Movement in class and through hip hop lyrics. I had a vague awareness that these events had happened during my parents' lifetime, but it still all seemed like "History" as though it was long, long ago. I now realize how quickly the things and events I remember as simply a part of my life are becoming "History." The stories, pictures and recipes in this book make me feel like I've been invited to a reunion of sorts. Reading it, places me at the picnic table, in the kitchen, and at the counter with the folks who not only kept the Civil Rights Movement nourished but who continue to keep people nourished as we keep fighting for justice and equality.
