It is just a great one, I like it! While I was reading it I even thought that Picasso's vision on art is even more remarkable and astonishing then most of his paintings. Vivid metaphors, incredible ideas, some of them might be over the top at times, but still. For instance one my favorite is his gorgeous idea on drawing that it couldn't be finished, as soon as it finished - it becomes a dead thing. He says that picture keeps on changing (after artist put his signature) in eyes of spectator, that depends on his state of mind etc. Or the other one - there is a lack of poetry in art, says Picasso, poetry fades away from pictures. There are plenty of stuff like that, I bet you'll enjoy it. Although, in the end of the book you start to feel bored and being loaded with repeating stuff. For now I'm looking for some kind of book like that - a collection of best quotes from various other painters. Originally I'm not a native english-speaker, sorry if I had several mistakes.

Understanding art

"Everyone wants to understand art," reflects Picasso early in this book. "Why not try to understand the songs of a bird?" It is a playful observation, and one that can only emanate, we imagine, from the mind of an artist throughly engaged with the material on palette. Picasso's witty comparison suggests art's elusive form and implies a truism which the reader will discover to be a driving force throughout these pages: The audience to a work of art, like its creator, succeeds by embracing rather than understanding the rendered object.

It is the artist's full embrace which resolves itself into an all-encompassing vision, the very contradictions inherent in that panoramic view requiring for their complete rendition an array of angled planes that can only be created by the shattering of constructive materials. Hence arises that formal abstraction that so often mystifies those who seek understanding through simple assertion. How many individuals, indeed, feel that certain works by Picasso misrepresent rather than render the real? "We all know that Art is not truth," muses Picasso in acknowledgment of this confusion. "Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand."

The truth that is so realized, adds Picasso, is something different from the artist's original vision, for the truly rendered subject, in a paradox, evaporates. Picasso recalls an effort to paint the portraits of two people; by the time his work was done his subjects existed no longer. In the artist's words: "The `vision' of them gave me a preliminary emotion; then little by little their actual presences became blurred; they developed into a fiction and then disappeared altogether, or rather they were transformed into all kinds of problems. They are no longer two people, you see, but forms and colors: forms and colors that have taken on, meanwhile, the idea of two people and preserve the vibrations of their life." So Picasso's human beings become real by disappearing from view, just as Isabel Archer becomes fully realized by vanishing at the conclusion of Henry James's novel.

Art reveals truth by lying. Subjects become realized by disappearing. Any reader witness to this book's magical paradoxes, arising as they do from that hidden place where the creative flint strikes steel, can only view Picasso's observations as lending to our vision of artistic discourse a rich chiaroscuro. We cannot say this book will deepen the reader's understanding of art, unless by that understanding one means an embrace of the imaginative machine's secret pistons.

An engaging, if not wholly cohesive, account of Picasso's sayoing and writings about art, but more. The strength of the book comes when he speaks on art. The ancilliary issues that come up serve to round out the figure of Picasso more, but may not quite be the art treatise you're looking for.

The People's Place will Touch Your Heart and Fuel your Appetite...

This book took me by complete surprise. I thought I would flip straight to Ruby's Restaurant as it is one of the few soul restaurants left in Chicago, my hometown. But each chapter captivates and fascinates you -- because of the heartfelt stories behind each place...the tenacity of the people who fought and sacrificed to keep these treasures open and thriving. Each chapter puts a face and heart on the restaurant, anecdotes that paint the portrait of these gathering spots -- and the role they played not only in the lives of its patrons but in American history. It is so sweet to see how organic and authentic the marketing is...like Sweetie Pie's rules of the road (No Sagging Allowed - No Wearing of Hoods in Sweetie Pie's) or Martha Lou Gadsden's portrait blazing on the outside of Martha Lou's Kitchen, a former gas station. The recipes are simple and accessible but the stories behind each place are rich and deep. Surely because this author, Dave Hoekstra, can really write. Mix Hoekstra's sensitivity and depth with fabulous food and it is a bestseller.

History Class or Family Reunion? Both and more

This book brings history to life by honoring the human story behind the Civil Rights Movement and the years since....(with recipes). Its a little like time travel without having to leave the present day. Growing up in the 70's and 80's, I learned about the Civil Rights Movement in class and through hip hop lyrics. I had a vague awareness that these events had happened during my parents' lifetime, but it still all seemed like "History" as though it was long, long ago. I now realize how quickly the things and events I remember as simply a part of my life are becoming "History." The stories, pictures and recipes in this book make me feel like I've been invited to a reunion of sorts. Reading it, places me at the picnic table, in the kitchen, and at the counter with the folks who not only kept the Civil Rights Movement nourished but who continue to keep people nourished as we keep fighting for justice and equality.

A revealing story, but not what you'd expect

This book was written about a year after the Church Committee concluded its investigation of the CIA's involvement with organized crime in its effort to have Fidel Castro assassinated. At the time, President Kennedy's involvement it the plot was unknown and no attempt was made to investigate it. Judith Campbell (Exner), however, was called to testify at that hearing and, as a result, was later identified as President Kennedy's "close friend," although she was actually Kennedy's part-time lover and his go between with Chicago's syndicate boss, Sam Giancana. Since she was a somewhat mysterious figure, while President Kennedy was still viewed as Prince Charming and the myth of Camelot still persisted, she was cast by the liberal media as the villain of the piece, a prostitute, a party girl, etc. and felt the need to tell her side of the story; thus this book.

The book is essentially Judy's life story as told from a woman's perspective but seems to have been aimed at presenting JFK, Sam Giancana, and Judy, herself, in the best possible light. Disappointingly, it sheds no light on the criminal aspects of Kennedy's activities in promoting the assassination attempt and fails to address her activities in that regard in any meaningful way. As a consequence, although the book is extremely interesting from a prurient viewpoint, it tells little about what really went on between Kennedy and Sam Giancana's criminal outfit.

It should be kept in mind, however, that when this book was written most of the principals involved in the plot, President Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, John Roselli, and Sam Giancana had already been murdered (Giancana shortly before he was to testify); and Judy, as she said much later in life, was afraid to tell the whole story. So, although this book makes truly fascinating reading -- especially if you want to really see how the rich, famous, powerful, and ruthless live -- time and more recent revelations have passed it by.

For the complete story, I suggest you read "Joseph P. Kennedy: The Mogul, the Mob, the Statesman, and the Making of an American Myth" by Ted Schwarz and "The Dark Side of Camelot" by Seymour M. Hersh, but by all means read this one too. You'll really be amazed at how the other half lives.

Exner told the truth

Judith Campbell Exner's naivete, and one can follow in her story the gradual extinction of her naivete at the hands of extremely ruthless men, seems entirely credible to me. She was searching for love and thought she found it. It took her a long time to understand the differences between male and female biological programming. It took her a long time to understand that there was no difference between the Mafia and the Government. She wanted love; the men were after sex and control. Sam Giancana made her a marriage proposal, which she refused; eventually he got even for that insult. His "love" turned into the hatred that it always was in fact. At the end of the book Judith thinks she has found a man -- Dan Exner -- who loves her and whom she can trust, but could she? The Evildoers keep a nationwide stable of small Don Juans like Exner whose only job is to romance naive women like Judith who are assumed to be keepers of nonexistent secrets. She, to borrow a description from Sam Sloan's "Mafia Moll: The Judith Exner Story," was a sort of "Forrest Gump" -- an unwitting and uncomprehending participant in all the back-stabbing intrigues between Kennedy, Giancana, and Sinatra. The men used her for her beauty and her naivete. To those with ears to hear, her story is a cautionary tale of immense suffering and crushed innocence.

Fascinating history

I wanted to read this book for a long time. It did not disappoint me.

I remember the days when voters worried about Kennedy's consorting with the Pope in running the country and when it was a shock that Marilyn Monroe was nude when found dead. At that time, the public thought the president was a charming, upstanding rich boy with an elegant wife and two cute children. This book sticks another pin in that balloon.

After reading Judith's book, several Mafia tell-alls that give a different version of the assassination than what has been given to the public, and a couple of Kennedy family biographies, all I can say is that we were as gullible as Judith was as she ferried papers and payoffs back and forth between Kennedy and Giancana.

Judith Exner seemed very naive and sought love and attention in all the wrong places. I would call her not much more than a moll, an object, used and passed around from powerful man to powerful man. Now that Kennedy's seemingly unending womanizing is public knowledge, this book is not as shocking as it might have been if published right after his death. Even so, a very interesting read.

Awful!!

MINUS 5 stars-save your money

Vague. Covers mostly recumbent racing of decades gone by (who cares)-coverage of so called "modern" recumbents is little. Most brands covered have gone by the wayside.

So called "Homebuilder's" section elaborates on the obvious with a few small dark pics. Very few pics in the book and the ones in there are small, dark and black & white. The color pics in the center of the book, of course, cover racing.

I bought Gunnar Fehlau's book, "The Recumbent Bicycle," while shopping for my first recumbent bike. There's a lot of recumbent bicycle information available on the web, but most of it is disjointed.

This book covers the topic of recumbent bicycles in an organized and cohesive way. It introduced me to the different types of recumbents and their merits. The chapter "Basics of Recumbent Design" was particular helpful in contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of short vs. long wheelbase geometries.

The history of recumbents provided interesting background information. The author has a sense of humor. The treatment is technical where required, but at a layman's level. The section on aerodynamics is the only one containing mathematics.

I read the book over the course of several weeks, both before and after buying my bike. The index is comprehensive and that made it easy to lookup various topics when I wanted to refer back to specific points.

The photos and illustrations are good and clear.

If you want to compare specific brands and models, subscribe to the various recumbent bicycle email lists. Read specific product reviews and owner comments at the recumbent and other bicycle web sites. Models change each year so a book detailing specific models would become out of date quickly.

I highly recommend "The Recumbent Bicycle." This is the only book I could find devoted to recumbents, and luckily it's a good one.

THE RECUMBENT BICYCLE review

This book is the only one that I could find on recumbents. It is a very good, comprehensive, primer through advanced forms of recumbent bicycles. Jasmine Fischer did an excellent job of translating from the original German. I recommend this book for anyone just interested in the history and stories of recumbents to someone, like myself, that is diving into yet another avenue of bicycling recreation and wants a lot of technical information. This old body desires a more comfortable position on the bike after more than forty years of riding a "wedgie"(conventional bikes), and succumbing to neck, back, and wrist problems brought on by same. The recumbent bicycle is the answer to my prayers.

Solid information, poorly presented.

This book presents a crappy appearance. At first, it appears disorganized and non-user-friendly, at least to someone who doesn't already speak and read modern Greek. It looks like a military training manual-purely utilitarian, developed directly from a single-width typewritten manuscript, with no use of typesetting. It's like reading pages typed on a Remington Portable, and the pages are packed solid, top to bottom, which makes it difficult to pick out any particular subject matter. There are reasons to use varying sizes and weights of type, and this book doesn't make use of them. The table of contents is useless-it's half a page long and consists of a list of topics covered, but without page numbers. Another reviewer mentioned that there aren't many examples of conversational usage; there are folktales including conversations.
On the other hand, there is a useful index. If you need to find out about a particular grammatical situation, you can, using the index. Another thing I like about the book is: there are no cartoons. Even the best college-level Greek grammar books, for some reason, rely on in-context cartoons to
...what? Break up the text? Make the student smile? Frankly, speaking as a student, I smile when I get the right information in a comprehensible manner, and am able to use it correctly. So, this book is worth having, if you are willing to put up with packed page after packed page of unvarying, uninflected typewritten material. For a Yale University Press publication, it's unimpressive. It really could use an overhaul.

Great book. I've been studying Greek for years now (my mother comes from Greece), and this book builds upon vocabulary and grammar in a logical progression from chapter to chapter. Best book I've ever used for learning the Greek language (besides the children's books I used as a kid). It's so great, I've search to see if there is a continuation to this book... (haven't found it yet).
