Dr. Stanley R. Sandler won the R&D 100 Award offered by the industry in 1990 for a significant commercial process to prepare an important organic intermediate. In addition to this honor, he has over 100 publications involving patents, books, an encyclopedia article, several journal articles, and he is currently a referee for several journals. Sandler received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Penn State University.

Wolf Karo was a winner of the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. He holds a number of patents, and has been active in developing applications of monodispersed microspheres in diagnostic testing and other areas of biotechnology. Karo received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Cornell University.

About the Author
Shawn A. Henry is executive director at the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI), where he concentrates on developing statewide change efforts in promoting advances in the training of professionals serving students with autism and providing supports for families. He was previously the program director of training and evaluation at the Kentucky Autism Training Center, University of Louisville (KATC), where he coordinated targeted professional development throughout the state. These experiences, as well as serving as an elementary special education teacher, primarily teaching students with autism, led Mr. Henry to develop the Comprehensive Autism Planning System (CAPS).

Brenda Smith Myles Ph.D., a consultant with the Ziggurat Group, the National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders, and the Education and Treatment Services Project for Military Dependent Children with Autism, was the recipient of the Autism Society of America s Outstanding Professional Award; the Princeton Fellowship Award; and the Council for Exceptional Children, Division on Developmental Disabilities Burton Blatt Humanitarian Award. She has written over 150 articles and books on autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns (with Southwick) and Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Practical Solutions for School Success (with Adreon). The latter was the winner of the Autism Society of America s Outstanding Literary Work. Brenda has made over 500 presentations all over the world, and served as the co-chair of the National ASD Teacher Standards Committee. Myles is also on the executive boards of several organizations, including the Organization for Autism Research and Maap Services Inc. In addition, she was recently acknowledged as the second most productive applied researcher in ASD in the world from 1997 to 2004.

CAPS

CAPS was very helpful for my staff. We are at a private day school for students with autism. Through out the day each student will work with at least three instructional assitants, each for a two hour block. With two hour shift changes CAPS was an easy way to alert staff to changes in supports needed as our students progress with mastery of skills. This cuts down on the length of our team meetings and provides another record of progress.

About the Author
Carol Krebs,RT,RDMS,RVT is an ultrasound consultant and instructor. She has worked in the medical profession for thirty years, twenty-five in ultrasound at Louisiana State University School of Medicine. She is experienced in all categories of ultrasound and specializes in vascular ultrasound.

Charles Odwin,BS,RDMS has been active in ultrasound since 1979 and is a Registered Diagnostic Sonographer. He helped create the local ultrasound society in New York in 1983 and is a past-president of the New York State Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Mr. Odwin has published multiple articles in ultrasound journals and has received an award for Publishing Excellence from the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. As an artist he has contributed as a medical illustrator to ultrasound test books. He is an instructor in ultrasound schools and is the primary author of several books and contributing author in others. Mr. Odwin is currently teaching ultrasound to emergency department physicians.

Arthur C. Fleischer, MD, Professor of Radiology and Radiologic Sciences, Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Chief of Diagnostic Sonography, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee In addition to Sonography in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dr. Fleischer has edited several other books in this field. A seasoned and active educator, he runs nationally recognized sonography courses and is a leading member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine group.

Don't waste your money.

This review book was assigned to my senior ultrasound program in our last quarter of classes. A colleague of mine who is a radiologic technologist had used the A&L RT review book and found it helpful, so my expectations when it was assigned were to be able to learn and to have a good array of review questions.

However, this book seems to be a compendium of outdated information rife with typos that would be hilarious if they were not so frequent. I am finding that working through it is about a 75% waste of time. Who edited this?.... Anyone?...... Anyone?

Another problem is that images are labeled wrong, or not labeled (e.g.: "Name the structure with the arrow on example 5-113," and then there is no arrow. Or worse, the arrow clearly, unmistakably points to the aorta and the answer is IVC.).

The OB/GYN chapters are better than the physics and abdomen chapters; the latter have significant errors in them. My biggest problem is that as a whole these questions require very little critical thinking and are not "pitched" at a level commensurate with what I believe the ARDMS registries require (I will update this review after taking my registries in Mar.-April).

And now, for amusement value, some of the misprints:

"posterior urethral values"

for intussusception, "intersuppection"

"pleura effusion" --- and the list goes on.

You get what you pay for considering this was 1/2 the price of some of the other better review books. There were multiple errors throughout the entire book. I won't go into them as most all have been cited in other reviews.

Much Food for Thought

It's great to have many of Hester's ideas in one place for easy reference. My main experience with his work has involved the notion of "sacred space," and it's good to have his clear exposition of that concept, but there's so very much more here. I'm nowhere near through it, just dipping into it from time to time, but gaining a great deal of enlightenment and insight from it.

interdisciplinary insights woven together with a grand vision

I had the great fortune of stumbling on this book. I just received it a few days ago and am in pure awe of all of the information in this book. Hester has really done something special here and it is not to be missed by anyone. And I mean anyone and everyone could benefit and enjoy this book: educators, planners, people who make policy decisions, scientists, philosophers, engineers, people in any field related to human health, designers, community activists, mothers, fathers, students, and any citizen of a democracy (or an aspiring democracy) in the 21st century. The best part about this book is that it also functions like an encyclopedia of sorts in that you can just turn to a page, start reading, and learn a lot. Given that I am not in the field of design, all of the concepts at first seemed overwhelming. However, Hester does a remarkable job of tying everything together with an inspiring vision. This is one of the most important books I have encountered in some time.
