John Newton - (1725-1807), Evangelical divine and hymn writer
Newton was born in London July 24, 1725, the son of a commander of a merchant ship which sailed the Mediterranean. When John was eleven, he went to sea with his father and made six voyages with him before the elder Newton retired. In 1744 John was impressed into service on a man-of-war, the H. M. S. Harwich. Finding conditions on board intolerable, he deserted but was soon recaptured and publicly flogged and demoted from midshipman to common seaman.

Finally at his own request he was exchanged into service on a slave ship, which took him to the coast of Sierra Leone. He then became the servant of a slave trader and was brutally abused. Early in 1748 he was rescued by a sea captain who had known John's father. John Newton ultimately became captain of his own ship, one which plied the slave trade.

Although he had had some early religious instruction from his mother, who had died when he was a child, he had long since given up any religious convictions. However, on a homeward voyage, while he was attempting to steer the ship through a violent storm, he experienced what he was to refer to later as his "great deliverance." He recorded in his journal that when all seemed lost and the ship would surely sink, he exclaimed, "Lord, have mercy upon us." Later in his cabin he reflected on what he had said and began to believe that God had addressed him through the storm and that grace had begun to work for him.

Ulrich L. Lehner has provided historians and theologians with a lucid and engaging account of an oft neglected facet of the "inner life of early modern Catholic monasticism" -- a penal system operated by and for members of Catholic monasteries. Dr. Lehner's short and spirited monograph reveals the increasingly complex entanglement of canon law with the judicial practices of the early modern state, especially during the eighteenth-century heyday of Enlightened Absolutism. The book also spotlights the lengths to which church leaders would go in protecting monastic traditions of corporate judicial autonomy while seeking to eschew scandal within the nascent eighteenth-century public opinion.

Dr. Lehner adroitly recovers a topic that has been too long neglected by scholars and Catholics alike, while deftly and skillfully demonstrating "that monastic prisons and trial procedures were a complex part of cloistered life that shaped the dynamics of monasticism between the Reformation and the Enlightenment (p. 3-4)." This foundational argument unfolds throughout a series of thematic essays, each of which affords the reader with a valuable component of Lehner's thesis. Yet, these chapters might just as well stand alone as essays suitable for general readers, scholars, graduate, and undergraduate students alike. The book first addresses the diversity of the monastic penal system as it evolved after the Council of Trent in a way that remains attentive to the diversity of this evolution throughout various orders and gendered monastic communities of early Modern Europe. Subsequent chapters deliver thorough and engaging descriptions of the nature of the monastic prisons themselves, as well as the criminal procedures utilized by monasteries (in particular the Franciscans). His final three substantive chapters provide insightful commentary on how monastic penal systems addressedspecific offenses. Of greatest interest to many readers will be the chapters of Dr. Lehner's book which deal with how convents addressed assault and assassination attempts in female monastic communities, and no less, how monastic authorities prosecuted "fornication and child abuse."

This book's laudable brevity and generally direct and engaging prose buttresses as well as belies its greatest strength -- the fact that it thoroughly grounded in an impressive amount of archival research anchored in solid and significant works of scholarship concerning early modern Catholicism and European History. Dr. Lehner's archival research has taken him (and with him, his readers) on a wide-ranging tour de force through thirteen archives in Germany, at least two in Austria, and one in Poland. The ensemble of Ulrich Lehner's narrative tends toward a timely and important conclusion about impact of monastic prisons on Catholic Reform and Enlightenment in the eighteenth-century and beyond -- that a thoroughly nuanced portrait of early modern (and by perhaps by implication, modern) Catholic renewal "has to take into consideration the moral failings of, and crimes committed by, monks and nuns (90)."

Fascinating book on a neglected topic

Dr. Lehner has provided a captivating and painstakingly researched book on the formation and practices of punishment in central European monasteries from 1600-1800. Rich with footnotes and scholarly references, this will surely enlighten anyone who carefully reads it. As far as I know, this is one of the only (perhaps the only) book of its kind written in the English language. Absolutely fascinating.

Kallis's "SAT Pattern Strategy", with cover color scheme evoking the classic Kaplan and a big gold sticker on the front claiming it as "Kallis' No. 1 SAT Study Guide" looks like it's been around forever, but is actually a new contender in the SAT prep guide fray of battling books. If you've never heard of Kallis, that's probably because the company got its start in the Asian market with a Chinese language edition in 2016.

The short review: The new text is not perfect by any means, but it has one sterling virtue: It does provide 6 full facsimile SAT exams with answer explanations. This alone makes it a worthwhile purchase. The quality of the questions and their fidelity to College Board SAT style and content is variable, but overall comparable to those created by The Princeton Review or Kaplan.

The nitty gritty:
I only use this textbook with my students as a supplement for those who have completed all 6 of the College Board official practice tests (or are saving some of those for use closer to their exam dates). The book suffers from a number of flaws and inconsistencies. First, the layout and graphic style is extremely distracting, with meaningless dotted lines, shaded text blocks in outlined, shadowed boxes, excessive symbols for tips of different types, useless "ticket"-motif pseudo-tabs on all pages, and more making it hard to read.

More troublesome, in mock test content, there is sometimes a marked divergence from the actual SAT. In English, some grammar questions are too subtle – or simply lack true distinction between the designated correct answer and the second-best answer. In the SAT, this should not happen and the College Board vets their questions extremely carefully to avoid it.

The Reading section does offer very challenging passages, but relies unduly on archaic sources and also presents some poor questions.

Essay questions, too, tend to be non-representative of those on the SAT (using the publisher's hired writers for sometimes wildly informal and unscholarly works rather than noted published speeches and articles) and the book offers no sample scored essays to learn from.

Math is good, though perhaps a little easy overall.

In sum, the Kallis book, though flawed, is a useful supplement to other SAT resources. I have my students work with the College Board book of 4 tests and additional 2 online to print out, official PSAT samples (since they are very close to the SAT in content and difficulty, created by the same test maker), and PWN the SAT for the best Math foundation for this test. When it's time for more practice tests, Kallis is helpful.
