excellent resources

Whether you're avoiding dairy for health or ethical reasons, you will love this comprehensive book that is both a guide to dairy free living and a cookbook.
The book begins with an explanation of what dairy is, including information about pasteurization, homogenization, lactose-free milk, kefir and milk from other mammals besides cows. She goes on to explain why some people avoid dairy--because of allergies, lactose intolerance, a vegan diet, autism, general health and more. She even addresses infant allergies--how to prevent and recognize them.
Another section is devoted to the question that many people wonder about--how can you get enough calcium with drinking milk. Fleming dispels the myth that you need dairy in your diet, tells you how much calcium you really do need, and lists many calcium rich (nondairy) foods. Before heading on to recipes, the book addresses eating out, traveling, and shopping--giving the reader insight into avoiding dairy when not at home.
Then, my favorite part: the recipes! And what great recipes they are. Perfectly Pear Muffins, Grilled Vegetable Strudel, Better Than Ice Cream, Vanilla Pudding, Lemon Struesel Squares and lots, lots more. A really nice feature is the chart that lists all of the recipes and notes which common allergens they do or do not contain, as well as whether the recipes are vegan.
I highly recommend this cookbook.

Great information, not so much a cookbook.

This book contains less recipes than I had anticipated. About the first half of the book is more informational about several topics like how to find hidden milk products in ingredients, suitable alternatives for dairy in existing recipes, etc. All very useful information but not so much for me. I was looking for a more traditional cookbook.

A vegan recipe book that calls for non-dairy alternatives as the ingredients.

Not what I was hoping for. I got the book based on the high reviews. I was looking for a cookbook with dairy free recipes. Half of the book is about being dairy free (which I didn't read, because I am doing this for my nursing baby). The other less than half is recipes.
The recipes are what I have the biggest complaint about. They are primarily vegan, if not entirely vegan. I am not vegan, I am dairy free, there is a BIG difference. Next, the recipes call for things like non-dairy margarine, non-dairy yogurt and vegan cheese. Who needs a dairy free cook book to know to simply exchange dairy items for non-dairy alternatives? Then, there is the nutrition fail. Just because I want ideas of things to make that do not contain dairy, does not mean I am willing to use garbage ingredients like margarine and vegetable oil and corn syrup. And finally, not a single picture to be seen. Not only do the recipes not sound tasty, there are no pictures to inspire you to even try these uninspiring recipes.
