OK for the Basics

I think that all of North Americas sea shore critters can not be described in a single book. Certainly not in a book of this size. The publishers where quite bold in the scope and as such much information has been left out. That said let me tell you what is good about this book. The pictures are GREAT! Much better than looking at technical drawings. However, they are not better for identification. The descriptions of animal groups are excellent. For the person with little biological background this will go a good way toward explaining the complexities of ocean life. The method of identification, sorting by superficial appearance is handy, again for the inexperienced. To sum it up, if you want one book to carry during your first summer of beach combing get this one. If you need a companion for a marine zoology class stay away, unless you already have everything else.

Good field guide and beautiful picture book

Perhaps I am going overboard in giving this guide a five star review but even a book with an adequate selection of color photos of marine invertebrates is just so darn beautiful I can't help but cause me to rave and this bok offers a selection that is more than just adequate. There is no way one can include all of the seashore creatures of US into one volume let alone a field guide and Audubon guides are not the best things to use for taxonomy. That being said it is a gorgeous little book and certainly helpful to the average beachcomber. Even if you are a Midwestern landlubber this is a great little volume. If nothing else consider it a mini coffee table book.

I found out about Marine creatures in my Marine Bio. class, and I loved them, so I got this book to further my looking into their world, and it's great. A must have for any person interested in going to the seashore, and just watching what runs around in those tidepools and on the beach.

Better books out there

I purchased this for a friend and was surprised when they gave it back and said I could return it. So my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to read it myself. I have to agree with my friends sentiments, this book really doesn't offer much that hasn't already been written in better, longer books.

Great Overview of hip-hop! Very current!

I really enjoyed this book. In a relatively short space,the writer provides a broad overview of hip-hop, getting beyond the usual suspects and showing what hip-hop means outside of the United States. To a certain extent, readers probably need to have some background in recent writing about hip-hop to get the full picture o hip-hop's history and its effects. This book probably best serves as a coda to Jeff Chang's "Can't Stop, Won't Stop" or Tricia Rose's "Black Noise" or anything by Nelson George. I guess I would ultimately say this is book is perfect for someone who already has some knowledge of hip-hop and is looking to go a bit deeper.

He obtained his doctorate in Nutrition and Chemical disiologicaen at the University of California-Davis. At the present time he is Associate Professor at San DiegoState University (SDSU), Where he teaches introduction to nutrition, and clinical nutrition, to students of undergraduate and post graduate degrees in the School of Exercise and Nutritional Science in the Global Health Program in the School of Public Health at San Diego State University(SDSU). His research and publications in magazines focus on the assessment of riesgonutricional in athletes older and people with chronic disease. Before his tenure at the University Dr. Beshgetoor worked as the and as a clinical dietitian. He is an active member of the American Society of Nutrition(ASN). Enjoys the music, hiking, biking, hiking on the beach, windsurfing, as well as spend time with family, friends, Taz and Toby.

Jacqueline R. Berning, P h.D., R. D., CSSD , earned her doctorate in nutrition from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. She is currently Professor and Chair of the Health Science Department at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS), where she has won numerous teaching awards. Dr. Berning is published in the area of sports dietetics and was the sport dietitian for the Denver Broncos for over 25 years, Cleveland Indians for 18 years, and Colorado Rockies for 10 years. Currently she is the sport dietitian for UCCS athletics and US Lacrosse. She is active in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, where she served as the chair of the Program Planning Committee for FNCE and is currently Chair of the Appeals Committee. In 2014, Dr. Berning was awarded the Mary Abbot Hess Award for Culinary Events for teaching the University of Colorado football team how to grocery shop and cook. Additionally, she served 6 years as an ADA spokesperson and is a former chair of the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists dietetics practice group. She enjoys walking, hiking, and gardening.

Gaile L. Moe, Ph. D., R.D., earned a doctorate in nutritional sciences at the University of Washington. She is a registered dietitian who has worked in clinical nutrition, research, and management, as well as education. She is currently Professor and Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics at Seattle Pacific University. She has published in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of nutrition and cancer and media reporting of nutrition research. Gaile enjoys swimming, cycling, walking, and hiking, along with learning about culinary traditions, food, and food policy.

Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, Ph.D., R.D., FAND, received her doctorate from Pennsylvania State University. Currently, she is Professor in the Nutritional Sciences Department at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate nutrition courses. Her research interests focus on investigating environmental factors that affect dietary choices and health outcomes. Dr. Byrd-Bredbenner has authored numerous nutrition texts, journal articles, and computer software packages. She has received teaching awards from the American Dietetic Association (now called the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics), Society for Nutrition Education, and U.S. Department of Agriculture. She was the recipient of the American Dietetic Association’s Anita Owen Award for Innovative Nutrition Education Programs. She also was a Fellow of the United Nations, World Health Organization at the WHO Collaborating Center for Nutrition Education, University of Athens, Greece. She enjoys exploring food and culinary customs, traveling, diving, and gardening.

If your career will involve understanding nutrients, buy don't rent

Depending on what you're in school for, I'd highly recommend buying this one over renting. It's a great resource (unless you need it for a class you're not actually interested in.) As a future dietitian, I'm really happy to have this one in my library. Great resource, easy to find what you need on any macro- or micronutrient.

It go's beyond your usual tantric sex satisfaction manual.

This is not your usual New Age Tantric sex manual of self satisfaction. It's an intiguing exploration of the profound possibility of communion. Sex is only one channel for intimacy. The author says you can tune in on the emotional and the mental channels as well. And then you can really knock your socks off, in and out of bed.

THE ONLY AUTHENTIC TANTRIC BOOK EVER PUBLISHED IN THE WEST!

What I appreciate about this book is Lee's refusual to sugar coat his convictions. With crazy-wise eccentric humor, and a few expletives to boot...; Lee calls it as he see's it. A close reading will reveal that this man could care less about signing up a bunch of feel good New Ager's desiring to avoid the dirt and crap that also are a BIG part of the spiritual path. "The Alchemy of Love and Sex" elucidates, with not a little humor, the dynamics that obscure men and women from living in a harmonious relationship, what creates dissonance and what creates resonance. The book will prove to be immensely unpopular as it offers no easy answers, except the obvious, that relationship is hard work. Just try treating your mate with the respect, awe, and supersensitive conscience that you would your Spiritual Master, or your favorite movie star, or anyone else you want to serve and impress. Try this for the rest of both of your lives. This book offers none of the usual rhetoric. It was Umberto Eco who said: "Common sense, even when true is always vague." In this book Mr. Lee exhibits a startling knack for bringing the vaguaries of common sense to the forefront. John Gray's "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" is rated G for commonsense Compared to Lee's "Alchemy" which is rated X for explicit common sense. It is perhaps Lee's unique contribution that he has retrieved spirituality from all the "All is One" or "There is nothing to attain, you already are Buddha or Jesus, and instead replaced it with an overall context of common sense. If you spill the milk, clean it up! This is more revelatory than many of us seem to want to admit. Then again there's alot we don't want to admit. This book admits alot, and to the extent that you will also, then this book will admit you to it's "secrets."

Vagueness Does Not Indicate Depth....

....And, in conjunction with that statement, "straight talk" does not necessarily indicate the revelation of some Great Truths.
Of course, I realize that the rebuttal to my statements is that I did not read with an open mind or heart, or even soul, when, in fact, I was more than willing to discover something outside myself that I could accept as Truth. More than that, I am generally considered so openminded that sometimes my brains leak out my ears.
That said, I did find this book helpful in a way that I did not expect - it gave me pause, and forced me to contemplate what I really believed about the way the Universe works, and about how I really felt about Love and all the other assorted relationships I have with others.
There was a lot of hidden, backhanded misogyny in this book, coated in the usual talk of "duality" and "worship of the archetypal Woman," but recommending "service," a "culture of women," and various other outmoded ideas. Funny, how I heard about all these same things in church as I was growing up, and in almost exactly the same terminology....
In the end, I would suggest that anyone seeking to find a deeper way of loving, or of living life, to look within him/herself, because, ultimately, that's where the real answers tend to rest.

The facts and nothing but the facts. Of course if you are looking for a more spiritual description of world religions, I would still recommend the Huston Smith book; The World's Religions.

A Must Read. Two Thumbs Up.

Okay, full disclosure. I love Melissa Brayden’s books.
My head would just about explode as I routinely checked Amazon for months only to find that her latest book, First Position, was only available to preorder in a printed version. The teasing went on for far too long before her publisher finally relented and decided to release the ebook. Here is my official thank you to the book gods. I understand the financial necessity of trying to sell more printed copies of books, but lets be real, that ship has sailed Mr. and Mrs. Publisher. Please stop with this recent trend of holding our ebooks hostage.
Anywho, lets talk about Melissa Brayden’s work.
As I’ve previously stated, I’m a big fan. Ms. Brayden is one of two or three authors of lesbian fiction whose work I would be willing to preorder without needing to read a synopsis. She always comes through. I thoroughly enjoy her writing style, her stories are always compelling, and her characters fantastic.
From the first page to the last, I was cheering for the two wonderful heroines in First Position to have their HEA and I wasn't disappointed.
(*****SEMI-SPOILER ALERT - Despite the fact that there was a healthy dose of drama, after all you can't have a good book of any kind without conflict, it was refreshing that one the main characters didn't have to do something horribly cruel or unforgivable in order to have that drama. Brooklyn Campbell, you know I'm talking about you. Readers of Ms. Brayden's Soho Loft Series will get that reference.*****)
I should also add how impressed I was by the serious research the author must have put in to give us such a vivid look into the world of big time ballet. I'm no expert, but she made it feel real to me.
This was, in my humble opinion, Melissa Brayden's best book to date. (I mean, seriously. You had me at ballerinas.) And believe me, that's saying something. Heart Block and How Sweet It Is are probably both in my top ten of lesbian romances.

Been there, done that

I'm a big Melissa Brayden fan, and taken by itself, this novel is a solid offering. But, if you are like me, and you tend to gobble up everything ever written by an author that you enjoy, you can pick their style and "tells" out of a line-up. With Ms. Brayden, it is oh so snappy and quick paced dialogue, which has been getting snappier and more clever with each book. Sigh, I get it, and I should like it, but I hate it. Also, it is getting harder and harder to tell her characters apart. So here's my recommendation: if you have only ever read one or two of Brayden's books, read this one, too, and you will definitely enjoy it. But, if you've already read all of her other books, move along folks, nothing to see here.

If you like Melissa Brayden's other books, you will love this one. If you haven't read anything by her, then pick up this book and then read her Soho Loft Romance series. Brayden is one of the best authors of this genre out there and she proves it once again with this book. Once again Brayden combines interesting, well developed characters along with damn good writing. She doesn't just "tell" but describes her characters and scenes. For those who read Kiss the Girl (which is one of my all time favorite books) and Waiting in the Wings, you will be pleased to see characters from those stories make an appearance in First Position.
