Spoelstra Does it Again

Great storyline that jumps from the present to the past and does so in a very clear manner. As Roy visits his past life, you are riveted to find out how he will interact with his ex wife, himself and the serial killer who took away his loved one and yet played a role in making Roy a small, but short lived fortune. Most of us would love the opportunity to go back in time and revisit our past. Jon Spoelstra awakens those thoughts as he presents this exciting thriller.

Mono No Aware = `Nothing lasts forever'

Angel Aranda , an American writer, poet, and artist, is new to this reviewer, and if this, her first published book of poetry is an indication of her talent, she is an artist to follow. Her style is beguilingly simple while reading this extended narrative poem (a few words over a course of 150 pages), but there is something intoxicating about the rhythm of this narrative poem that pleads to be re-read after the entire affair is a thing of the past.

The title of this conversation between two lovers separated by time and distance and the vagaries of emotions reflects the poet's sensitivity, the Japanese words for `nothing lasts forever' - and perhaps at first reading the poem may speak to the reader about the intransigence of first love, but as Aranda expands her communication, we are able to hear the varied aspects from infatuation, to obsession, to the salvaging of those moments as time tests love, to discovering the universal spirit of love - transforming, exhilarating, durable despite distance and time. Yes, there is a lovely story of a young love affair here, but there is far more as the title suggests: love, like life, is constantly changing, and perhaps comes in cycles - of which this story is only one. And the manner in which Aranda allows her lovers to sail into the stars is just as palpable as the pain that can accompany a wounded heart. Angel Aranda is a welcome new poetic voice. Beautiful romantic poetry

I was given this book by the writer to read and review. It was a quick read but I read it twice just to get the feeling for it. There is a good explanation at the beginning, giving the meaning of the title and the concept that it represents. The form of the poem is short stanzas on each page which can be quite distracting when reading a hard copy as opposed to a kindle version, however the mood and pace are excellent and I was completely moved by the whole experience.

Reading this, one cannot but help thinking about the first experience of love, and memories certainly came back to me of tender and innocent moments, separations, love letters, all which are subtly illustrated in this work.

This writer has, with an artists brush, painted a beautiful picture of the constant changes of life and love in simple poetic language. I will look for more of her work.

I think the author, Angel Aranda, of Mono No Aware, is a very talented writer. She was able to describe how love can be felt at a young age and carried on for years after being separated, no matter the distance between them. (If that makes any sense). Anyone who has experienced love at some point will be able to relate to this book. I think this book would be ideal for any teenager/adult who has experienced "love".

Internet Privacy - Get it and Keep It

There's valuable information for almost all of us in Michael Bazzell's revised and expanded (2nd edition) of "Hiding from the Internet."

For those with privacy concerns (most of us), who want to make themselves smaller targets on the Internet -- this book tells exactly how to do it.

For investigators, who have legitimate need to use the Internet to investigate the bad guys -- this book is also a superb reference.

Mike Bazzell, a computer crime detective with the Alton (IL) Police Department, assigned to the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force, reveals scores of web sites that trade in people's private information on the Internet. He describes how to contact them and get them to delete your personal data.

Details like home addresses, occupant and relatives' names, landline and cell telephone numbers, email addresses, Internet usernames, and dates of birth are the sorts of information that can be eliminated -- if you know exactly how and where to find it.

This sort of personal profile information is collected from us constantly through our everyday business interactions, largely for marketing purposes. Bazzell explains exactly where and how this happens. The information collection is ubiquitous and seems unescapable for the average, uninformed consumer. It is compiled into databases by businesses who sell it. Much of it ends up on the Internet where it can be obtained by anyone, often for free or for a nominal price.

To get this information suppressed, you first have to find who's selling it. You do this by investigating yourself -- conducting a thorough search on the Internet for your personal details. The book tells you precisely how to go about this investigation -- where to look, which search engines to use, and how to phrase your questions. Obviously, some readers will use this feature to look up other people -- not just themselves. The big search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing are used, of course. But so are many others you may not have heard of (names like Yandex, Blekko, Qwant, Duck Duck Go and Baidu).

There's a link to a custom search tool the author created that will let you search all these search engines (and more) simultaneously -- a huge time saver. The links for this book as well as other general investigative links, are on Bazzell's web pages at http://computercrimeinfo.com and http://inteltechniques.com. But without the book, the links have more limited value.

Readers should pay special attention to the numerous "People Directories" identified in Chapter Eight. These sites can be searched individually and many will provide some important personal details (like names, ages, addresses, and relatives) for free in hopes that you will spend money on a "complete" profile or subscribe to their service. Most will remove your information from their database if you specifically request it.

There's also a great chapter on the large social networks -- how to search them, how to set your privacy controls and how to delete information. Self-inflicted wounds -- deliberately spreading your personal details all over social networks -- is, clearly, a major privacy problem and one to be avoided. Another chapter identifies online telephone/address directories including resources that reveal unlisted landline and cell phone numbers. The final chapter shows how to create a free web page to alert you when you are targeted by people searching Google for YOUR personal details -- things like your home address or telephone number.

Bazzell stresses the importance of maintaining good standing (using your true identity) with your legal creditors and government agencies with which you must deal but shows how you can confound the commercial people tracking databases through misinformation and misdirection techniques. He shows, among other things, how to develop anonymous email, telephone, and address information. There's also extremely valuable information on safe computer practices and how to navigate online without identifying yourself.

This book doesn't guarantee total anonymity. It doesn't pretend that you can extract yourself from government public record databases like property tax, courts, or professional licensing. It just shows you ways to significantly lower your online profile. Many people will be shocked to learn how much non-governmental information is "out there" on the Internet once they go looking. Getting rid of it, as explained in Bazzell's book, is a major undertaking but one that some people will find to be worthwhile and some will feel is absolutely necessary. Others may choose not to act but will, nonetheless, find the information to be a real eye opener.

This new book now occupies a prominent place in the investigative library I have compiled over the past quarter century. I highly recommend it to all.

About the Author
Helen was born in Mesa, Arizona in 1920. She was the youngest daughter in a family of seven four girls and three boys. Her father was a dentist. Later the family moved to Phoenix where she attended Phoenix Union High School. When she was eighteen she attended Brigham Young University where she met her future husband, Aubrey Andelin. After they were married they resided in Los Angeles where Aubrey attended dental school at the University of Southern California and served a term in the military at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California. Helens dedication to improve marriages began in 1962 in Fresno, California where she taught marriage classes to women, drawing from her own resources. Her unadvertised classes grew rapidly from a small group of eight to a large audience of 170. Women poured into her classes from all walks of life all religions, races and cultures. The most amazing thing about her teachings, however, was the lives it was changing. Marriages that had become dull and uninteresting became romantic again and those in deep trouble were rescued and renewed. Her teachings offered solutions and saved many marriages from divorce. The project she entered into with a light heart now became a project she viewed with soberness. With the success of her marriage classes she conceived the idea of writing her book, Fascinating Womanhood. The first printing of her book was an immediate sell-out. The classes continued to grow and soon other women requested permission to teach the Fascinating Womanhood course. This created a greater demand for her book, which in turn created a demand in the book stores. Her husband formed a small publishing company to meet this need. In nine years sales totaled near 500.000 copies in hardback. In 1974 Helen signed a contract with Bantam Books to publish the book in paperback for mass-market distribution.In 1975 Bantam Books sent the Andelins on extensive publicity trips where they were interviewed on all major

Love it

I read Fascinating Womanhood first, and got this afterward. I've had them both for over a year. Pretty much everything that is covered in here, is in FW. But I guess there are slight differences, seeing as this one is more tailored to the single woman, and FW to the married woman. But either one is a great edition to the library. If you don't have an open mind, there is no point in picking up this book or FW, because you're going to have to examine yourself- HONESTLY- and see if problems in your life are stemming from yourself. I love the principles taught, and apply them, and want to continue to apply them, to my life. It has helped me change my outlook on life, and it has definitely gotten better.

The best work on Foucault, in my opinion

I have read a majority of Foucault's own works and many works on Foucault's philosophy and style of thought. But nobody's work on Foucault has struck me as directly as that of Paul Veyne. I first read Veyne on Foucault via a couple of essays he had featured in a text edited by Arnold Davidson entitled "Foucault and His Interlocutors."
Veyne, being a close friend and associate of Foucault's, has perhaps a more intimate grasp of the character of the man than most writers, but it's because of his deep appreciation for the style and methods of Foucault's work that his writings are so striking. To my mind, Veyne distills the strength and sensibility of Foucault's intellectual character better than anyone else. This books is even better than I hoped it would be, and I had very high expectations.
Anyone who has been struck by the power of Foucault's works and his approach to life and thought will greatly value Paul Veyne's work.

excellent summary

A very enagaging, lively and very well written and translated account of Foucault thinking, his major concepts and his amazing character and personality. I have my quibbles about using the same translation word "set up" for all uses of Foucault's favorite term "dispositif". Wish, perhaps, that no translation was even used in this case. After all no one translates many Latin or Greek words and terms in philosophical texts. But it is a very minor irritant.

Foucault made personal and accessible

This is a wonderfully illuminating exploration of the thinking of Foucault by someone with the crucial perspective of knowing Foucault all his life. There are some moments of personal reflection and hyperbole in Veyne which are disgressive, but this is only a minor issue. For the most part, this book makes the complexity of Foucault's thought and character very accessible, as it should be. To some extent, what inaccessibility there is in Foucault's work likely originates in us, not him.
