Poor Eli Rose can't catch a break. Just when he gets himself out of one jam, the plucky hero of Bob Erlich's 1960s-era crime and espionage novel No Vacancy gets caught up in another scheme. Try as he might, Eli is never the master of his own fate; when he fulfills one demand from the mob, he finds himself drawn into an even worse situation with the CIA. If No Vacancy were only about the misadventures of young Eli Rose in Miami, Cuba, and Costa Rica, it would be a fairly standard spy/crime/action-hero beach read. One character, however, makes it rise out of the sand-and-surf genre: Vicente Amaron.

Mentor, protector, teacher, sidekick, surrogate father figure, and �minence grise to Eli, "Mr. Slick," as Vicente is first introduced, is a charming, funny, noble, solid, and mysterious gem of a character. A key figure in the anti-Castro Cuban exile movement, with ties to both the Miami Jewish mob and the CIA, Vicente is more than just the second banana in this book's dynamic duo. Vicente drives the action, and he does so with style and grace.

Erlich forgoes the cheap fractured Spanglish to which so many authors and script writers resort. The speech patterns are authentic, written in a way that can only happen when an author takes the time to get to know and listen to people of the class and caliber represented by Vicente Amaron.

This is a "guy's" book. As Ian Fleming did with his original James Bond stories, Erlich has his characters act in a solid, believable manner that is appropriate to the time period. He takes care to get the details, tone, setting, and feel of the 1960s without pandering to the cheap seats. The result is a story that feels authentic, with characters that feel real.
No Vacancy starts as a coming-of-age story. It then segues effortlessly into an action novel populated by a "desperate group of individuals playing a desperate game" of espionage, sabotage, greed, revenge, and personal and Cold War politics. There are fist fights, gun battles, jungle skirmishes, and sea-going chases; plenty to keep an action-genre junkie happy. The book is short on female characters, but the three Erlich creates are wonderful. For example: "He couldn't possibly explain it to his friends from other parts of the U.S., who had never experienced the sensory overload of a Latina in full battle dress--a mini skirt short as a bathing suit, tight, low-cut blouse, and long dark hair and eyes to match, a killer combination for the unsuspecting gringo who failed to see the oncoming trap."

That is, however, about as salacious as Erlich gets. In writing about sex, as in writing about violence, Erlich is a master of restraint, demonstrating an old-school sensitivity meant to tease, not pander. The result is a solid, enjoyable, and fun read. Best of all, No Vacancy is the first book in a trilogy, one that is off to a very promising start.

A very valuable resource - more than a beginners guide

As with other beginner's books by this publisher, the book starts by indicating the installation process, and the proverbial "hello, world" project. The example is very trivial, but serves the important explanation of project structure, what's what in the project. Testing gets paid attention, which is nice, and then some recommendations on additional tools for sprites, textures etc. Maybe the absolute beginner can feel a little bit daunted by the amount of info to digest in the first chapter, regarding the many classes and infrastructure that you need to make a simple hello world. Luckily as the book progresses the concepts get clarified and expanded on, and that is what chapter 2 does, because obviously the hints in the chapter 1 are not enough.

I personally prefer books that explain things first rather than other books that expect you to infer things from examples. I like that Chapter 2 explains the pieces that make Cocos tick, the Containers, Nodes, Scenes, Layers, the Director, Caches etc. The author then proceeds to guiding the unexperienced developer to a basic understanding of C++ Classes, header files and all, explaining almost every line, and finishes off by bridging the differences between C++ developers and Cocos2D developers so they are familiar with the common ground offered by the framework.

Without further ado, Chapter 3 sees us create the first game, where we finally start to see some action by adding resources, preloading sounds, targeting retina displays, extending CCSprite, and even adding multitouch. It's nice because a functional game is created step by step. One also realizes that game dev is relatively complex even when it's a simple game. The book again follows the way of showing the code and then proceeding to explain it line by line. Chapter 4, builds on the previous chapter to build now a different, more complex game. We're not just stuck to simple examples.

Chapter 5 continues wit this dynamic, building a different game, this time about rockets, this time introducing some particle physics, as the next level of complexity in your games.

Chapter 6. Different game. The twist comes with the introduction of testing and rapid prototyping using placeholders with the Cocos2D platform. The author now reveals this is how he created every example in the book. Abundant screenshots and lots of code accompany here. I think the chapter is well placed. You've followed how to code a couple of simple games, then you're shown some "secrets" and techniques for testing your ideas before investing lots. After the prototyping, chapter 7 actually builds the game with the real graphics, so you get the whole picture from concept testing to actual implementation.

Chapter 8 introduces Box2D, for adding realistic physics, that would be way too much effort to do on your own. Project creation is a breeze, but you got to take account of the differences between coding a game with Cocos and with Box (different classes, basically). It can look simplistic, in the sense that even when using a game library, a lot of tweaking for the right values of trajectories, where to place things, etc must be done.

Chapter 9 rounds off our game coding by introducing ancillary aspects, like reading/writing data, scenes, transitions, etc, which not being vital, are things every game needs. For me the game in this "level" ;-) is the funniest, but I am a platform buff. Notifications, via the observer pattern, are introduced too. Using the accelerometer in the device.

Chapter 10 closes the book by paying attention to what used to be a hell for me ten years ago when doing games for the j2me platform: portability. You get warned and then led to creating different projects for different devices / platforms and some additional tools. Appendix A then gives you some vector course 101 if you were a bit weak in that aspect.

Needless to say, a book like this is code-intensive, otherwise it would not be much worth. You could say that it reads as a series of tutorials of increasing complexity, the main chapters being self contained in this sense, which is good if you want to complete chapters one by one in easy sittings.

The games cannot be complex production pieces, that would exceed any book's scope, but I think they are enough to motivate you to start coding some game of your own. In that sense, the book gives you a more than adequate basis. For sure, if you not only read the book but take the trouble to type and make some changes of your own to the book, you will no doubt spend quite some hours engrossed with learning all this stuff. Be sure to check the code download, full of comments not present in the book for obvious reasons.

All in all, I'd say the book in this case is more than a beginner's guide. Nobody becomes a master of anything with just one book, but this one sets you off handsomely.

Definitely the best way to learn Cocos2d-X

Cocos2D-X stands as a great way to switch from single-platform to multi-platform game development. This great framework effectively allows developers to maintain a single codebase while publishing to a huge number of platforms. Although it is as great as it sounds, the amount of information available on how to learn/use it is scarce, to say the least.

This book - Cocos2d-X by Example Beginner's Guide - presents itself as THE way for experienced Cocos2d-iPhone developers to make the switch to multi-platform development, by using the Cocos2d-X framework. It accomplishes that feat by introducing the basics of the C++ programming language and explaining how you can apply your knowledge of Cocos2d to build great multi-platform games. It follows a step-by-step approach and provides detailed explanations on how to effectively transition from the Objective-C"-centric" Cocos2d-iPhone to the C++"-based" Cocos2d-X.

Throughout this book, you'll build five (somewhat complex) little games that will allow you to learn how to use texture atlases, handle animations, create parallax layers, handle physics and particles, among other essential tasks.

As it stands, this is the best Cocos2d-X resource I've encountered. It's aimed at experienced developers with knowledge of Cocos2d-iPhone, but I believe that it's actually pretty easy for an inexperienced programmer to gather some useful information from this book. The way that the author presents the information is clear and concise. He rarely misses important facts/info and even offers some extra tidbits of useful information along the way.

I came across a few inconsistencies and errors throughout the book, mainly in the code's formatting. A few times, the code examples mentioned variables that were presented with slightly different names within the Xcode project. Although that can be somewhat distracting, I was able to overcome these few hurdles with ease, mainly thanks to the way that the author clearly explains how everything works.

I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the rare inconsistencies in the code formatting and also because the author assumes the developer is working on a Mac. It's understandable, due to the fact that this is aimed at the Cocos2d-iPhone developer. However, seeing as Cocos2d-X is a multi-platform framework, it would've been great to see a few instructions on how to setup and build projects on other platforms. Although the author does explain how to build for Android through Eclipse, he misses out on explaining how to create a Cocos2d-X project in Visual Studio and/or how to build an application for OS X or Windows.

Overall, it's a really great book for anyone interested in moving to multi-platform development by using one of the most popular game development frameworks available. It stands as the ultimate resource for learning how to develop games with Cocos2d-X and it's definitely a must-buy for anyone interested in doing so.

Absolutely necessary

My company has been working with cocos2d-x for more than a year. It's a great framework, but the problem with it has always been the information available: insufficient, fragmented, usually in Chinese (or in a rudimentary English).
This book takes the time to clearly explain most of how Cocos works and why. The examples are very good and easy to follow because the author explains regularly what has been done, going almost line for line. The writing is fun and the difficulty of the concepts introduced each chapter ramp up smoothly.

NOW THE RANT: I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the book assumes the reader is working in Xcode for deployment on iOS. Having worked on cocos2d-x before, I had no problem working on Windows 7 (Visual Studio 2010) instead and testing in the same machine, but I know how difficult it can be to get the framework to work on different environments. For instance, the third example (Rocket Through) crashes on Windows unless you make a simple change to a C++ class not referenced in the book.
The author could have added to his explanation of setting up the environment in Chapter 1 not only Xcode, but also Eclipse (for Android) and Visual Studio (for Windows), in case a beginner does not work on Apple machines (which is very common), and reference the little differences between implementation for all of them throughout the examples. Relating to the same problem (and this is being a little more nitpicky), some of the example code you can download (not all, which is weirder) is formatted for Mac and is a drag having to reformat each .cpp and .h file for Windows (if you don't, it won't build).

Other than that, the book is absolutely necessary if you want to start working on cocos2d-x. There are many, many things we learned the hard way that could have easily been learned in a few minutes or hours with this book. It closes the gap of the most basic information missing out there, although there are a lot of things that are probably not included related to deploying to different platforms and the common problems you can encounter while doing so.

Never enough hours in a day for these beautiful projects.

I just received Donna Kato's Creative Surface effects. This book appeals to me immensely as I love the heavy Asian art and Art Nouveau influences The coloring of her projects feel both soft and strong, and I love her patterns. I like this book as her designs are substantially fine art creations. The designs are rich yet bold with patterns that are unique. Techniques are well demonstrated through both pictures and clear instructions. This is not quite for the novice as it assumes that you know the basic polymer clay techniques. However, I think it would be a great addition to anyone's library because the point is to challenge ourselves. So many beautiful things and never enough hours in a day.

Fantastic Donna Kato does it again with this Book !!!

I'm a professional researcher at heart so when I delve into a topic I dive into the deep end and don't come up until I've exhausted the field. True to form this is what I've done with polymer clay. My thinking: If I'm going to spend a lot of money on tools and supplies I'm going to research the heck out of the topic so that I technically understand what's what. As with most artistic mediums, success and high quality results are dependent upon the artist/crafter's understanding of the technical issues. This is where Donna Kato comes into my life (so to speak).

I purchased Kato's first book 'The Art of Polymer Clay' and was blown away by the depth and breadth (underline that last) of subtopics presented. Her writing and step by step explanations are clearly presented without being too pedantic. The side by side pictures detail the techniques being discussed and don't omit that critical step which makes the difference between success and failure. Some authors don't edit their own work very well and when omissions of this sort happen it drives me crazy.

From my experience with her first book I purchased Kato's `The Art of Polymer Clay: Creative Surface Effects' and again wasn't disappointed (remember my expectations at this point were high). This book is an outstanding tool. With Kato's help, and admittedly the help of other well qualified author's my overall appreciation of polymer clay techniques has grown leaps and bounds and I look forward to years of expressing myself in the millions of ways this particular medium allows.

Excellent overview of clay techniques and basics

I was totally new to clay working, heading for a class in the medium, when I purchased this book. I was absolutely delighted, and was able to start my class with some background and understanding of working the materials. I sit in awe of Ms. Kato's talent, and did find the techniques more difficult than they look. This aside, it is an excellent accumulation of many of the techniques that makes polyclay such a joy to work with. Ms. Kato does list several varieties of clay, inks, paints and other products, but I appreciate that she enumated which she found easier to work with, and why. I did expect some bias towards Kato Polyclay, as she helped develop it, but have also found this an excellent product to work with and have not been disappointed with its performance.
The book is a MUST HAVE for the beginner reference library, and is also an inspiration with the images from Ms Kato and other artist's collections. I'm pleased I purchased this book, and plan to keep it as a cornerstone for clay working.

The action continues in Hunted. Following Shanti's decision to leave Cayan's town, she follows rumours about a man who's a ghost. Thinking he may be her brother she eventually tracks him down in the enemy's camp. There she not only finds her brother but also an unknown man who talks in riddles and seems to be a guide. With her escape and the much talked about Hunter on her trails she finds herself once more in the path of Cayan and her honour guard, making hard decisions. Discovering Cayan's past may also help unlock his immense powers This time she's not by herself as she finds herself trusting in the people around her and sets out to the Shadowlands as danger follows close on their heels.

With impressive fighting scenes and emotion running through the pages, the Hunted pulls the reader into the story and has your heart racing to see where it leads. K.F Breene delivers just as she did in her darkness series and makes you care for the people in the story and has you cheering for the good guys even while seeing the path of the enemy.I can't wait to see where this story goes and i totally recommend this. Time to let our females fight.

What's next in this exciting in gripping series?

When I finished the first book in this series, Chosen, I didn't think it could get any better.
Alas, I was wrong. BOY was I wrong. I could not put Hunted down. I was reading it between calls at work, on breaks, while eating dinner, I was addicted. I could not stop reading. And then, the unthinkable happened. But we'll get to that in a minute.
In Chosen we learned a lot about Shanti and what drives her, a little about Cayan. In Hunted we learn more about both of these exciting and complex characters.
We also get to see a glimpse of how Shanti used to be when she is with her brother Rohnan, and we see the background characters evolving as well.
With the Hunter coming after them, Xandre aka the Being Supreme still a huge threat, the action never stops. Shanti draws more allies to their cause and continues on her journey with Cayan, Sanders, Burson, her Honor Guard and Rohnan to the Shadow Lands to undertake the trials to become the Chosen. (Burson calls her the Wanderer).
Hunted will have you hooked from the first and when the unthinkable happens, you will be going no, no, NO and looking for the next book in this exciting series. Hopefully K.F. Breene doesn't keep us waiting too long.

Have no doubt, Hunted is an action packed thrill ride. Chosen was amazing and gave us a great understanding of our characters, but Hunted was so meaty I will be full for days! Only days though, so the next book needs to get here in a hurry.
Shanti is on her journey to fulfill her role a Chosen, and encounters many additions to her close circle; some are pieces of her old life returning to her, and others are new, interesting additions to the already amazing cast of characters. The growth of Shanti and Cayan’s understanding of not only their powers – and how they interact – but also of each other.
This Ms. Breene is very sneaky in how she includes small bits of romance into this book, but make no mistake – while it is a underlying feature, Hunted is focused on the journey, not the destination.
I fell in love with Shanti in Chosen; her vulnerable yet fiercely determined personality was endearing. We now get a bit more insight into her emotions and the toll they take on her. Shanti proves her self more with every decision that she is the person that does the right thing, not the easy thing. Plus, she is a bad-ass warrior – who wouldn’t root for her?
Cayan is, gah! Wonderful!! He refuses to stay separated from Shanti, even after her less than stellar departure. The thing I love the most about him is that even though you can totally tell he is in love with her (though I don’t know if he know that yet), he knows that they need to be together for the greater good and that is a driving force for him.
All of our favorite characters are back plus some new ones that add so much to the story – but I won’t tell you. I am not a spoiler!! I am SO excited to see how The Warrior Chronicles plays out!!!!

Surprising, Delicious, Fun - A sweet couple take a bold sexy leap. I want to see more.

This was a very enjoyable and sexy read. It kept me captivated and pulled me in more than I expected. I thought I was just going to read a bit before going to bed, but instead I couldn't stop until I was done (fortunately it was short). Two things I will mention however: One, to the author: While I really like your writing and style, have another proofreader look at it. You have a few obvious typos (extra words that you forgot to delete, some misspellings - an autos "brake" is not spelled "break", etc). But readers, that's just for the author to know about so she can fix it and make an already wonderful story even easier to read - the mistakes are very infrequent and I still heartily recommend this story. She's a truly talented writer and I look forward to reading more of her stories. (One last thing, add a little more to the end. We think we know where it's going, but it would be so much more satisfying to read a few details on how they will go on, even if more about them comes in another book. I hate to call it a cliffhanger, but some might.

Good until the last chapter

I really wanted this to be a 5-star review but the book ended up disappointing me at the very end, which really lost it a star rating. It starts out very well, has some good character development, and even some fun and erotic scenes. But the last chapter just made me feel like it was a "hot mess" with the mixed message that our male lead LIKES what is happening and HATES what is happening. A different ending would have improved it a great deal.

Hot story,the lead up into what started their adventure,a great parking garage setting,the party setting and getting there was a bonus scene and had great backstory with the watchers the party romp was interesting but ended way to soon. Would have liked more to come.

Somewhat useful but much better is the primary source for this ...

Somewhat useful but much better is the primary source for this book: 'Piano Technique by Walter Gieseking and Karl Leimer'. At one point he reveals his 'improvement' on that source by sharing his own method of memorization - a method that does nothing to solve the problem of finger memory which is one of the main promises of the book.

There are more than a couple times when the lack of effort put into this book is made annoyingly clear. For example once he mentions that he can't remember the name of a biography of Horowitz but thinks it might have been the one authored by Dubal. Really? What would it take to find out?

Another time he mentions he no longer has a book by Neuhaus so cannot quote a passage from it. Come now, how much effort would it take to get a copy, find the quotation and give it to us?

Slapped together, nothing new, and almost the cost of the original source. Spend your money elsewhere.

Bolton 's approaches work

I have been a poor musical memoriser for many years; perhaps since my early teens. It is the sort of thing one tends to hide; people know you play the piano and then ask you to play. I dread that because I do not have a significant memorised repertoire although I can play many pieces if I have the music.

David Bolton’s book is extremely useful and highly practical. It takes some of the ideas from the Gieseking-Leimer approach but makes them more accessible; he adds lots of ideas of his own. He goes through many situations in which memory lapses can occur and offers solutions.

He indicates that a poor musical memory is not uncommon but is not terminal; something can be done about it. He provides a set of solutions which will sometimes reinforce each other. His use of music in PDF form has facilitated new approaches to assisting with memory.

I have looked at several books on improving musical memory but have not found them worthwhile. In contrast, Bolton’s book says a lot that is new, practical and immediately applicable.

Full of good recommendation

I like the presentation of the book. And I can actually relate to many of the points that the author stated. Many of his ideas reinforce what I already experienced and it is reassuring to know that someone feels that way too. Great book to improve your music education not just in the memorization techniques but also how to practise effectively.

Classic Rock Doesn't Translate Well to Classical Guitar

This book is nicely printed and the TAB staff is helpful. I was getting a little tired of practicing traditional Classical Guitar music, so I had hoped that some modern songs would spice up my practice time.

After working through several of the arrangements, it seems to me that "Classic Rock" songs don't translate well to the Solo Classical Guitar. Although I was familiar with the pop version of the songs, the arrangements don't seem at all familiar. I am no music theorist, so maybe someone with greater experience can explain what is missing. Maybe I need a drum machine and a background keyboard to go along with this.

The beginning student should note that about half of the arrangements require non-standard tuning. This isn't hard to do but it is different from practicing with standard tuning and hence complicates the practice regimen.

In conclusion, I think the are great rock songs but they don't seem to hold up well outside their intended environment.
