About the Author

Marge Lial was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College.

 

Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

 

Raymond N. Greenwell earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of San Diego, and an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Applied Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Michigan State University, where he earned the graduate student teaching award in 1979. After teaching at Albion College in Michigan for four years, he moved to Hofstra University in1983, where he currently is Professor of Mathematics.

 

Raymond has published articles on fluid mechanics, mathematical biology, genetic algorithms, combinatorics, statistics, and undergraduate mathematics education. He is a member of MAA, AMS, SIAM, NCTM, and AMATYC. He is currently (2002-2005) governor of the Metropolitan New York Section of the MAA, as well as webmaster and liaison coordinator, and he received a distinguished service award from the Section in 2003. He is an outdoor enthusiast and leads trips in the Sierra Club’s Inner City Outings program.

 

Nathan P. Ritchey earned a B.A. in Mathematics with a minor in Music from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. He earned a M.S. in Applied Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently a Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Youngstown State University. He has published articles in economics, honors education, medicine, mathematics, operations research, and student recruitment. Nate is a Consultant/Evaluator for the North Central Association's Higher Learning Commission and regularly participates in program evaluations.

 

In recognition of his numerous activities, Nate has received the Distinguished Professor Award for University Service, the Youngstown Vindicator's "People Who Make a Difference Award," the Watson Merit Award for Department Chairs, the Spirit in Education Award from the SunTex corporation, and the Provost's Merit Award for significant contributions to the Honors Program.

Excellent book. Content well organized with many practical application ...

Excellent book. Content well organized with many practical application problems. I particularly liked loose leaf version because it was less costly and I was able to take a section of the manual out for transport during a trip making for a much lighter load. Note that corresponding solutions manual (sold separately used or new - highly recommend) only shows solutions to odd numbered problems, however, problem types are duplicated so this did not pose an issue. Not sure of updates available in newer edition, but it's pricey. Since the principles/concepts covered in this book really don't change, my class only required the older edition which covered the material nicely.

Necessary for my classes, easy to follow book overall.

Book is alright, purchased it because it is required for two math courses I have to take. Overall pleased with the application portion of the text, I feel like in the business aspect of things it makes a little more sense for me. Questions range from easy to difficult as they should. The back of the book contains answers to odd numbered questions, but does not work through the actual problems (which is a plus because it makes you think and analyze your own answer if you get something wrong). My instructor prefers to use the textbook in class and it seems to compliment his teaching style well. Purchased from Amazon.com, not an individual seller on Amazon.com, so the text came wrapped appropriately and in new condition as advertised.

Old Editions are a great buy

My professor allowed our class to use this later edition. Honestly, even with this older edition not much was changed other than maybe a few problems being out of order, but still the same problems​ from the newer edition. Once I told everyone it only cost me 0.16c + shipping and handling, they were all floored. This book was a great buy and I even got a MyMathLab Code with it! Great deal!

Groundswell is swell - BUT don't buy both books!

I have read the original exceptional Groundswell book, and bought this book thinking that it might offer some additional insights on marketing strategies through social media.

Shame on me - I did not read the description very well for this book. It is simply an abridged version of the original book, with three of the chapters reprinted. There is nothing new other than a very brief introduction by one of the authors. I'm at a loss as to why this book was published at all.

I am giving the content of this book 5 stars because it deserves it. However, don't waste your money on this. Buy the full original book instead. You will get much, much more out of it.

This book rocks and is a must-read

Have you seen Jurassic Park? If so, you might remember Dr. Malcolm's (Jeff Goldblum) diatribe about the dangers of doing something just because you can:

"I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here: it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you're selling it, you want to sell it!"

How does this quote relate in any way to Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff's book Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies? Maybe it's just me, but I see a direct correlation.

Groundswell is about social computing (I, a non-analyst, prefer the term social media) and how it's shaping not only the personal lives of many individuals around the globe, but also the way companies do business. It's not that social media is anything new; I've been an active participant on numerous online forums for over 10 years now. I've made money, formed close friendships, gotten jobs and learned countless things--all through different social media applications.

Lately businesses have begun to tap into the groundswell--"a social trend in which people use technologies to get the things they need from each other rather than from traditional institutions like corporations"--to enhance customer relations, build brand loyalty and, of course, make money. These days hardly a day goes by where some company or another isn't discussing their web 2.0 strategy and taking the plunge--in most cases, "because everyone else is doing it." Or the opposite--doing nothing for fear of opening up a giant can of worms that, once released, will run rampant and ruin the company's reputation or slash profits.

The thing is, as the book aptly points out--doing it just because others are doing it or because it's possible isn't reason enough to incorporate web 2.0 applications into a business strategy. Just as bringing carnivorous dinosaurs back into existence just because it was possible without thinking about the consequences wasn't the brightest of ideas, jumping on the social media bandwagon just because everyone's doing it isn't reason enough to do it. Obviously the consequences of starting a blog, establishing a presence on Facebook or randomly beginning Tweeting are nowhere near those of setting loose a bunch of killer dinosaurs; however, the underlying concept is the same: maybe you should think about it before you do it.

The beauty of Groundswell is that it lays out in explicit detail the RIGHT way to develop a social media strategy. Forget just randomly tossing around a few ideas in a conference room then rushing back to the computer to start blogging or start a Facebook page; Groundswell provides hard data about the ways people are using social media and shows you how to develop a strategy that taps into your specific customers' behaviors and needs. Bernoff and Li go a step further than telling stories about what other companies have done; they provide a tool businesses can use to assess their own customers' social media behaviors in order to develop a strategy that taps into those individuals' behaviors and needs.

And of course, in addition to the facts and figures and case studies, Li and Bernoff give a very comprehensive overview of the groundswell technologies and how and why to use them.

In short, Groundswell is by far the best and most comprehensive book I've read about social media and I honestly think it's a must-read for anyone with even a passing interest in web 2.0. Forget Good to Great or those other yawners that every company has employees read before the annual retreat/brainstorming session; Groundswell is much more interesting, informative and pivotal to the way companies will be doing business from here on out.

While 2006 is a long time ago by social media technology standards the book remains as valuable today as when written over 24 months ago. At one level the book does try to provide guidance and framework abstracted away from the social media du jour.Setting aside the survey data, the valuable frameworks relate to evaluation of social technologies, the new psycho-graphics of social network usage - social technographics,the POST (people,objective,strategy and technology) planning process for social media deployment,a listening plan, ROI template for a support forum,company transformation plan and the seven principles of successful organisations using social media.Beyond the frameworks what makes the book are the stories shared by the variety of stakeholders including large and small organisations and the technology vendors. This book is very cheap for the strategic thinking about social media you will gain after an initial reading.
The lead author Charlene Li has long left Forrester and heads the socially focused consulting group Altimeter based in Silicon Valley. Whether you are reviewing recent paid Forrester research or Altimeter findings the book will prove to be a valuable basis for executing business plans embodying the use of social technology. As Charlene stated in 2008 "...social networks will be like air" and we are only going to see social network capability incorporated in everything we do whether the activity be watching tv or shopping.The book provides a firm foundation for business survival in a world of social technology and furnishes the marketing student with contemporary knowledge not normally taught on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 2010.

I am not exactly sure what I just read. The language was good, the writing was like a 40-something page prose poem. I have read "the coming insurrection" and I suppose I expected more of the same but this was not it.

I think they are advocating some sort of anarcho-primitivist revolution but I cannot be sure. I did enjoy some of the content quite a bit and their criticism of the "activist" culture of the left was right on target.

Oh well, they can't all be winners. Not a bad read, overall, but very scattered.

How Israel achieved water independence in 10 years

Seth Siegel has written a fascinating, engaging and highly readable book telling the story of how Israel went from chronic water shortages to being a water-exporting nation roughly between 2001 and 2013. Most people probably don't feel they need to know how this happened. But the story of Israel's struggles and ultimate triumph over the scourge of water scarcity is a drama so exciting, and it has such an exhilarating ending, that anyone who picks up this book will end up being very happy they did.

Siegel picks up the story of water scarcity in Israel in the 1930s, when British experts were issuing one report after another arguing that the Jews trying to flee Nazi-dominated Europe just could not be physically accommodated in British-controlled Palestine. The Zionists, headed by David Ben-Gurion, sought to prove the British wrong, and thus was born the Israeli effort to turn a half-arid, half-desert land into a water-rich country capable of sustaining millions.

Along the way, Siegel has a great time telling how the Jews got water to their illegal settlements in the Negev desert; how the National Water Carrier brought the Sea of Galilee to the southern deserts and made the city of Beersheva possible; how Israeli-invented drip irrigation proved that it could not only save half the agricultural water needs of the world, but could do so while at least doubling crop yield for just about anything farmers grow; how Israeli engineers turned waste water from a repulsive pollutant and a health hazard into a central pillar of Israeli agriculture; and how desalination of Mediterranean sea water finally went from a dream to a reality in just the last few years.

This is truly a feel-good story. But Siegel also sheds light on some dark times and some dark issues. His chapter on the pollution of virtually all of Israel's rivers is heartbreaking, and he doesn't spare us the deaths of 4 Maccabiah games athletes who were poisoned falling into the muck of what was left of the Yarkon River in Tel Aviv. Siegel also makes an important case for Ben-Gurion's nationalization of every drop of water in the country (including the rain falling on your roof) in 1959. This nationalization may have saved Israel, but Siegel also reminds us that until new legislation in 2007, Israeli municipalities used their income from nationalized water resources as a slush fund to subsidize crony politics, rather than fixing badly decaying water delivery systems.

Under Siegel's light and witty pen, all of this come's off as hugely entertaining, and leaves you with the feeling that you're learning things that everyone really should just know.

This is not to say that the book is without flaws. First, most readers will probably want to know which Israeli political leaders took responsibility and made the tough decisions to turn their country into a water-rich nation--as well as who opposed them. But while Siegel does mention some names (Baiga Schochat, Ariel Sharon) in passing, his book disappointingly shies away from really giving us a picture of the political struggles at the top that led to this miracle. Second, Siegel's overwhelmingly positive outlook may leave some readers feeling like important things are being swept under the rug. Siegel asserts that the socialized water system was free from corruption, for instance, but there are points in the book where you begin to feel that things couldn't have been quite that peachy.

Something in the water

When you realize that Israel exports two billion dollars’ worth of water from a tiny desert state overflowing with people, it might be instructive to know what it is they’re doing. Seth Siegel’s book is an in-depth, tightly focused and exhaustive look at the totality of what the country has accomplished in water.

There are three basic levels to the story. PEOPLE must be conscious of their water consumption and actively minimize it. The need has forced TECHNOLOGY to take leaps and bounds that have vaulted Israel to world leadership in water management. And unusually, there is the POLITICAL WILLl to manage natural resources nationwide for the benefit of all, even to the point of co-operating regionally. With these three arms working together, and the only place on earth where all three are firing in sync, Israel is the poster child for survival.

On the people level, everyone shuts off showers while soaping up, closes taps when teethbrushing, and uses dual flush toilets Israel pioneered. Flow restrictors are on all showers, lush gardens are actively discouraged.

On the tech level, Israelis invented and perfected drip irrigation - to where crops need a fraction of the water (and fertilizer) that flood or spray irrigation requires, and produce more. Israel has pioneered improvements in desalination, allowing it to let lakes and rivers recover naturally while desalination provides the country’s water – to the tune of more than 90%.

In management, Israel recycles 85% of sewage (vs 8% in the USA). and sends it to agriculture. Even toilet paper is recovered and recycled, reducing landfill and increasing processing capacity by 30%. Israel is now actually short of sewage, because people have so reduced their water consumption. The country has done deals regionally, pumping Lake Galilee water to Jordan in exchange for a desalination plant on Jordanian territory in the Gulf of Aqaba. Leaks have been reduced to about 16%, because water authorities monitor all systems continuously.

Even before its founding, leaders knew water was the number one priority. The British refused to allow greater immigration because there wasn’t enough water to support the local population. At that time the population was little more than half a million. Today it is 20 times higher, and Israel exports water.

Despite Israel’s pariah status globally, Israeli water technologies and strategies are finding their way into Africa, Asia and America, as water shortages become the norm.

The book is straightforward, if a little fawning. Siegel avoids the Dead Sea disaster, in which 95% of the Jordan River is diverted, and the Dead Sea is losing three feet a year. It’s to the point where shoreline hotels now must run shuttle buses to the shore. He keeps to his topic, and holds interest with results, since there are so many substantial ones to describe. He addresses the elephant in the room - the Palestinian situation - but as ever, there is no meeting of the minds. Still, 96% of West Bank Palestinians have state-provided clean water, where none had it before.

Let There Be Water is a blueprint for survival: necessary, critical, successful, and replicable.

Bringing Water to the Promised Land

As 2015 winds down, and we look backward on history’s hottest recorded summer ever, perhaps it’s time to consider the future. As entrepreneur and philanthropist Seth Siegel writes, changing rain patterns severely threaten human populations. The California drought offers a foretaste of impending crop failures, urban stresses, and ecological catastrophe. Siegel directs our attention to the one nation with a long history of forward-thinking water policies: Israel.

The state of Israel has pioneered important advances in how to use and improve our water consumption since before the state existed. They've developed ways of moving water from where it exists to where the people need it, allowing high-yield agriculture in regions traditionally arid, even in historic deserts. They’ve improved water use techniques, increasing farm yields with less water, while cities consume less, leaving farmers and wildernesses more.

Siegel provides an intriguing mix of history and science, describing not only what advances Israel has made in water management, but also why it made particular advances. He describes the unique political, economic, and geographic pressures shaping Israeli water policy. The mix of intense regional water close to lifeless desert was, recently, almost unique to Israel. But as Siegel notes, if environmental trends continue, similar conditions may soon exist globally.

First, Israeli culture doesn’t disparage water. Children never sing “Rain, rain, go away.” Israel nationalizes water access, making all water everywhere a common good. While American libertarians campaign to repeal laws against rainwater collection, Israel maintains a strict enforcement policy: rain barrels aren’t a right. Hoarding or misusing water isn’t abstract moral wrong; Israel considers water abuse theft from the people, and prosecutes water hogs accordingly.

Because water is scarce and distributed unequally by nature, sharing and distributing water has the same aura of civic responsibility in America that we get from, say, joining the military. Responsible water use isn’t some mere principle; it’s a foundation of common civic government. By basing much public philosophy on communal responsibility to water, Israel’s government might superficially resemble American conservatism; but it expresses very different impulses in actual policy.

But Israel couples this nationalizing with incentives for more egalitarian, democratic water management techniques. According to Siegel, much municipal water in Europe and America gets lost to leakage, but Israel has created technologies designed specifically to curtail leaks and limit mechanical waste. Especially since home leaks often aren’t noticeable until they’ve created significant structural damage, the shift to preventative identification has both public and private benefits.

Israeli engineers, working through public-private partnerships, have invented more intense, ecologically specific irrigation technologies: Siegel extols drip irrigation, invented in Israel and now more commonly being adopted in other nations and continents. Israeli agronomists have created new plant variants that put more growth into edible fruits and flesh, less into inedible stems and foliage. This boosts agricultural yield from limited water applications, costing less in transpiration and wastage.

Israel’s National Water Carrier, which moves water from the moister north to the arid south with minimal evaporation, rivals the Interstate Highway System as a marvel of public-spirited engineering. Israel has found ways to recycle urban wastewater into clean, fresh irrigation, and connect water where it is with soil where water’s needed. Siegel describes the public commitment to water in ways familiar to Americans praising George Washington every July 4th.

This book describes technologies, social movements, and other important forces in language accessible to non-specialist readers. He describes very intricate advances in aquifer management, farming, and sewage removal, without bogging down in terminology. Siegel’s storytelling resembles a novel: much like Leon Uris, he makes Israeli history moving and alive. He’s just discussing water, and water policy, rather than war.

Siegel delves into the history of Israel’s water consumption style. It didn’t just intend to create better water usage; many of its techniques were invented to facilitate land grabs in places like the Negev before Partition in 1948. Love Kye

This isn't my first Emma Hart book, but this is the only book in the series that I have read. Don't let that deter you though. Even though having the background of the other brothers and then finding their HEA's would have been nice, you don't need it. Ms. Hart did a great job introducing the other characters without feeling completely lost. Storyline was predictable, but that's okay, I expected it to be after reading reviews and descriptions on the other three books in this series.

I absolutely loved the way this brought me back to all the feels that come with your finding your one, your other half, the one one you can't live without. You know that funny flutter you got when you met your true love, the way your breath hitched when he first kissed you? Yeah well I don't..definitely didn't have that..hehe!! But that's why I read. Right, I live vicariously through the characters the authors have become so aquatinted with in their writing.

Mix one incredibly sexy guitar player from one of the hottest boy rock bands and a girl whose father was a Rock God that made her despise any male in that industry and you get Kye Burke and Chelsey Young.

Kye is the sensitive one of the group the last of the kids to leave his parents nest. A momma's boy, well maybe until he decides to help decorate the family Christmas tree! He is a lover and a fighter..he knows what he wants and he will do whatever it takes to get her. He actually was so good, I cried a few times..he's that good!!

Chelsey I did want to slap around a little, I'm not gonna lie. She comes off as a basket case and a bitch. Is she? Yes and no. She has a good reason to be as guarded as she is. Her father was not exactly the best role model. She was forced to go on the road with him after her mom passed away her senior year and she saw way more than any child should witness of their father. The tour bus was a turnstile for groupies in and out her father's bed. Chels is quick to believe that that is the norm for everyone in that industry. That time she spent on the road with her dad caused her some major insecurities and rather large trust issues.

What she doesn't count on is Kye and how determined he is to prove to her that he is NOTHING like her father. The chase is on....

KYE - my favorite Burke of them all !! I LOVE MILA !!!!!!

Tate's book may have been my fave book of the series being that we got Dirty B on tour BUT Kye is definitely my favorite of the 4 brothers. He is genuine and funny , easy to be around and just all around hot and amazing !! Chels was a bit annoying with her slightly angsty attempts at keeping Kye away but she grew on me and I was happy with their ending and I did enjoy their journey. I mean Kye hot and drunk , Kye playing the hero in the storm and Kye just giving himself to Chels - ALL AMAZING things to read. Panty melting that boy !!

Have I ever mentioned how much I love Mila... LOL ok yes I say it in every review, why stop now. This little girl is right at the top of my list of fave things about the series. Her words , her hair , her attitude. The only thing I hate is that all the stories took place in a small amount of time so we didn't get to see her grow up too much. I mean her toddler ways are adorable but I do want to see her grow into a little lady...maybe a novella , maybe a story of her :) PLEASE

Chels knows the Burke bros and their family well. Jessie is one of her besties and they all come from a small town so it is what it is. Chels has always been difficult so it is no surprise that after their amazing yet drunken night she tries her hardest to stay away from Kye. Seriously who can resist his charm. Burke bros go big or go home so there is no way Kye is going to back down from proving Chels wrong. She knows the game , her dad is a rockstar, he left her as a child, and now although he tries to make up for it, he just ends up throwing her in the spotlight with his every move. She is tainted by her father's actions and sadly she may miss out on the chance of true love Burke Bros style. The drunken confessions , the raw honesty and the game of chase leave us with some panty melting scenes and some super funny scenes , of course we also get our Mila moments !!

With the band heading back west to record their new album the clock is ticking for Kye to win Chels over or let it go. Nobody is happy about the boys leaving and keeping that in mind there are some things in the works. With Chels fighting Kye right down to the very last minute I didn't know what to expect. I enjoyed the ending , loved the surprise and of course loved the New Year's Eve glimpse of the other couples. I am feeling a novella coming on - right - we totally could do with a novella after that last scene !!

Fab read - I really enjoyed it

This was my first Emma Hart read though I doubt it'll be my last. While this is the fourth book in this series it can totally be read as a standalone and the author does a great job of backfilling essential bits of the previous stories. I'm intrigued enough by the other characters to want to check out the previous books.

I really warmed to Kye Burke from the outset. He was sexy, sweet, witty and so caring and protective of Chelsey despite the fact that she regularly blows hot and cold on him. I loved how he didn't give up on her even when she was downright nasty to him. That's not to say that he was a walkover - because he most definitely wasn't. He challenged her and ultimately made her face up to things. Kye is easily the best thing about this book.

Chelsey was such a refreshing female lead. She was an out and out bitch, and I don't just mean a snarky, sassy type. She was MEAN, but I actually loved it, and she gave me some great laugh-out-loud moments. And it's not all a facade to hide her true persona though that was partly the case, but she does have an inherent mean streak.

I really enjoyed Emma's writing style, and she writes superb, sharp, humorous dialogue. All characters were solidly developed, even the secondary characters, and the romance was steamy without being too hot. The book flowed at a nice pace and there weren't any slow, repetitive, or overly descriptive parts. A nice even read. The plot is very predictable though but it wasn't a major issue as I think that's pretty much par for the course with these types of books.

In summary, this was a fab read and I'd highly recommend it to fans of NA/Contemp women's fiction.
