Tamer specializes in the internationalization of the firm, global strategy, emerging markets, and buyer-seller relationships in cross-border business. Tamer s professional career spans teaching, research and administrative responsibilities in international business at Michigan State University, Bradley University, University of Wisconsin, and the Middle East Technical University (Turkey). Tamer has authored more than a dozen books and over 190 refereed journal articles. His work is among the most cited contributions in international business. His books include "International Business: The New Realities", 2nd Ed., co-authored with G. Knight and J. Riesenberger. Tamer holds MBA and Ph.D. degrees in business from the University of Wisconsin.

Less Information Than Expected

While the content in the book itself is fairly good, I was a little bit disappointed with the size of the book. I was expecting a fairly large business textbook, but really it's more like a 300 page novel. Not in the sense that it's a story, the content is still very much a textbook, but it's quite small and short. When it arrived in the mail I felt a bit ripped off, since I had paid $61 for the book at the time.

The content itself is fairly good. It contains economics, business ethics, risks, legal information, and pretty much anything else for a basic understanding of how to conduct a business internationally. Important words are emphasized (both in text and with descriptive definitions in the back) and the additional info graphics and side notes are actually fairly informative. Unfortunately, they are all in black and white which can sometimes be difficult to comprehend, especially with graphs containing various shades of gray. I think the summaries are well done, and are great for a last minute cram before a quiz. There are no practice problems in the book though, so it can be difficult to test your understanding. The chapters aren't tediously long though, which is nice.

I believe there are video modules for teachers, though we have only seen a few in class, they were very helpful in relating content to real world situations and were entertaining.

Raymond A. Merriman is a market analyst and editor of the MMA Cycles Report, an advisory market letter issued 12 times per year, and used by financial institutions, investors, and traders throughout the world since 1981. He also issues a weekly and daily market report, with recommendations on the stock market, precious metals, currencies, crude oil, U.S. Treasuries, and grain markets. Great Book on determing Price Targets and more....

In this 300 page book with 21 chapters and the addition of many recent charts and tables, Ray goes into great detail in Volume 5 on exactly where to buy and sell at the correct price based on a number of methods. Some of the concepts covered for identifying Price Targets are based on Gaps, Intermarket Divergences, Head & Shoulders, Pivot Points, Retracements, Last Phase of a three-phase cycle and a number of other Target projections techniques.

He gives many examples for both Bull and Bear market price objectives so the reader can easily understand the concepts from both sides of the market.

Ray explains about the importance of trading in agreement with three time frames. For the long term investor, this would be the Monthly, Weekly and Daily. For a shorter term trader, it could be Daily, 30 & 5 minute time frames.
Merriman covers techniques for the Position Trader as well as the Short-Term Trader. In addition, he tells the reader when to expect fake outs to take place based on certain Astrological conditions.

One chapter is solely devoted to "How to Create a Training Plan" which is critical to becoming a profitable investor/trader.
I found that I could learn the strategies easily by following along the chart examples in Ray's book and then duplicating them in my own charting software.

To sum up, Ray Merriman's Volume 5 is a master study, chuck full of the best ways to determine accurate Price Objectives in all the Financial Markets.

Learning about the various cycles and how they tend to perform has been an eye-opening adventure in something that had previously felt too overwhelmingly complicated to delve into. Ray makes his topic accessible and determining the buy/sell opportunity periods possible for anyone willing to apply his principals. He brings his talent for recognizing the trends and patterns down-to-earth and details precisely how to replicate his success using the actual history of the stock markets he follows. I can't wait to get started applying these new ideas to my own financial future!

This is a great book. I can really use it.

This book is the fifth and last volume of Ray Merriman's series on Stock Market Timing.
In his previous four volumes his focus has been on teaching the reader how to recognize and use astronomical patterns of planet cycles that he calls "Geo-cosmic correlations" to accurately time market movements. Each progressive volume is thoroughly researched, documented in detail and easily testable. The information is by its nature dense, yet he manages to present it in a straightforward linear manner that is easy to follow. It's a lifetime of data that can be easily referenced and studied.
His final offering, "The Ultimate Book on Stock Market Trading-Volume 5", changes focus from geo-cosmic correlation analysis to chart pattern technical analysis and provides the reader a last refining level of detail for capturing price targets. The book is just as impressive in its presentation as the first four. I was especially appreciative of the glossary in the opening pages with detailed descriptions of 50 or so of commonly used terms that I have heard or read but didn't necessarily completely understand. After an overview of some of the key elements from previous books he jumps into the new material on technical charting. He doesn't try to describe every type of technical market indicator ever invented--which I am grateful for. I have books on those, none of which are particularly helpful because I have no idea how to use them. Ray presents a selection of indicators that he considers the most useful. He devotes a chapter to each and explains in his patient thorough fashion exactly what to look for, how to measure it, and how to project it. I tried out the chapter on the "head and shoulders" configuration. I recognized one. I drew the trend lines just as he instructed, and it is still trending as projected, right on the money. Yea! So now, it's on to the next chapter.

Good writing, technical problems

Very high quality writing (what I've read so far), but the Kindle version is marred by a missing link to the table of contents. You have to go to the cover, then page forward. I bought this originally for the Jack McDevitt story, and then couldn't remember why I bought it because the "first" page is the beginning of the first story. This is my first attempt at reading a magazine format on the Kindle. Another important feature that's missing is that there's no indication of length. When I read SF magazines I like to pick the stories based on the time I have to read. I realize that page numbers would be useless -- maybe a word or sentence count?

This collection of fantasy and science fiction short stories has a mix of both original and reprints that vary in quality. “Dry Bite” by Will McIntosh is an interesting take on zombie stories, one that focuses on the survivor’s interactions with their deceased loved ones, and was such a good read. D. Thomas Minton’s “The Schr�dinger War” hides the main character’s pain inside an endless loop of war, and really underlines the horror of both.

“Ragged Claws’ by Lisa Tuttle was just okay, with the full impact of the story hinging on the reveal at the end. The protagonist goes to a club and targets a group of young people, and focuses on their conversation about the mythical Colony some have migrated to. “Angelus” by Nina Allan was a much more solid story, although I found some of the details of the world confusing. Two men, once friends, meet in very different circumstances and discuss the woman that changed both their lives. Gene Wolfe’s "Suzanne Delage" totally confused me. The narrator recounts a woman he knew all his life but didn’t know until he saw her daughter, all the while meditating on the meaning of life.

“Homecoming” by Seanan Mcguire was the real standout of the bunch. I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I don’t like sports, and I LOVED this story. It’s the most original reworkings of a popular myth I’ve read in a while.

I love "Lightspeed" -- This one, not so much

Let me be the first to say that I just love "Lightspeed" magazine. I have purchased every single one, and enjoyed them all with very few exceptions.

This particular issue, well, I would say that if it's your first time reading "Lightspeed," pick another one -- any other one. They're all great. But this issue I found a little too relentlessly grim. I know I can't expect to love each and every issue ever; hell, maybe that's the only kind of stories people are writing just now. This magazine is always a terrific value for the money, and I will continue to buy every issue. Just don't get your first overall impression of the magazine from this issue.

Incidentally, I want to mention also that "Lightspeed" has consistently awesome covers. Looking forward to next month.

About the Author
John F. Savage is Professor Emeritus at the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, where he was Coordinator of the Graduate Reading/Literacy program for 33 years. He began his career as a classroom teacher when Dick and Jane dominated the reading scene. He taught reading with a phonics/linguistic approach and was an active participant as whole language gained popularity in classroom programs. He has witnessed the ebb and flow of phonics in schools for over 40 years, and he still maintains an active role in classrooms with teachers and children. Dr. Savage’s professional writing includes five college texts in reading and language arts, including Teaching Reading and Writing: Combining Skills, Strategies, and Literature (McGraw-Hill, 1998) and For the Love of Literature: Children and Books in the Elementary Years (McGraw-Hill, 2000). He has also written scores of professional journal articles, a children’s trade book on dyslexia, and other material that ranges from magazine articles to basal stories. Most recently, he has written a comprehensive primary grade phonics program, Phonics Plus (Educators Publishing Service, 2006). A popular speaker, John Savage has conducted workshops on reading instruction all over the Unites States, in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia, where he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar.

Great Resource

In my undergrad program, this was the textbook that was used to build our foundation of the various phonics elements. This is a gem of a book. Since then, I have purchased other phonics books written by many other 'experts' in the field and I have come to one conclusion. This is the best one out there. The other phonics books gives you the authors teaching strategies and what works for them. Well, as you all know... what works for one teacher and their class doesn't work for you and your class. I still refer back to this book to cement my knowledge of the multitude of phonics elements and how to teach them. I highly recommend this book to novice teachers and new teachers. I used it a lot when I was a Title I teacher in a school district. This is a great resource I plan on keeping for the rest of my teaching career. Great job Mr. Savage!

About the Author

Brian A. Hatcher is Packard Chair of Theology at Tufts University, where he is also Professor and Chair of the Department of Religion. He is the author of several monographs on Hindu reform movements in colonial Bengal, the dynamics of modern Hindu eclecticism, and the life and activities of the social reformer, Ishvarchandra Vidyasagar. I suspect this book is marketed to too narrow of an audience. Yes, I can definitely see how it is an effective field guide for those in the design world, BUT it is just as helpful for those of us who work in the social sciences. Far from being stuffy, the Simplicity Cycle is laced with wit, humor, and helpful anecdotes. I felt like Ward was my personal coach standing by my side as I contemplated the best way to approach projects at my organization.

I also really appreciated how richly documented this book is. Ward provides the reader with numerous options for further learning on several topics.

Whether you are looking to cut costs, maximize profit, save time, or sharpen your interpersonal skills, this simple book will be worth your time.

Simplicity itself

Dan Ward really nails home a point in this book--that our tendency to confuse complexity with goodness creates significant problems in systems design. This rule applies whether you're a writer or a rocket scientist. If you can do it (whatever it is) with less, then you reduce the risks of unintended consequences, design flaws, mistakes, and the rest.

In the spirit of the book, I'll keep it simple: buy it, read it, learn it, do it.

Couldn't Put It Down - Simple and Effective!

Dan's new book was featured in a college magazine article last year. While the topic of his book sounded intriguing, I took extra interest since we both graduated the same year from the same upstate NY engineering school (not sure I can promote that school by name here, but it provided a great foundation for both of us). So I decided to make the small investment and, at a minimum, help out a classmate with their dream.

Usually when I read a book, I'm asleep in the first 5 pages and it takes me way too long to finish. But I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. After 20 years working for an engineering consulting firm, every few pages reminded me of a struggle I'd had during those 20 years and perhaps a better way I could have approached those issues. I now have his trademark Simplicity Cycle figure memorized and use it on a regular basis as I start new designs or work to refine previous designs. My plan is to buy a few more copies and send it to other alumni who also work in this firm (one of which also graduated in the same class) because I know they'll appreciate it and find value in it, too.
